AppBlock vs AuraLock: Two Ways to Protect Your Focus

AppBlock vs AuraLock compared: block-list rules vs whitelist-first Auras, scheduling, Strict boundaries, on-device privacy, and pricing — which fits you?

By AuraLock Team

You have already tried blocking apps. You installed the blocker, built the list, felt good about it — and then the notifications got smarter, the habits changed, and the list quietly went stale. A new app appeared that you never remembered to block. A rule expired at the wrong hour. And somewhere in there, the blocking became another task you maintain instead of a boundary that protects you.

That is the hidden cost of block-list tools. They ask you to keep chasing what distracts you — and as long as you are chasing, the distractions are winning the relationship.

AppBlock and AuraLock are both popular ways to stop phone distraction, but they take opposite approaches. AppBlock is a block-list tool: your phone is open by default, and you block the apps you find distracting. AuraLock is a whitelist-first tool: your phone is closed by default, and you choose which apps stay available during a session.

This comparison looks at how each app actually works, where each is strong, and how to decide which one fits your situation. Both are legitimate tools — the right choice depends on the problem you are solving.

The core difference in one sentence

  • AppBlock asks: “What do I want to avoid?”
  • AuraLock asks: “What matters to me right now?”

If you know exactly which apps steal your time, AppBlock’s question works well. If you would rather decide what should be available and protect that choice, AuraLock’s question is the more deliberate one — and it does not require you to stay ahead of every new distraction.

How AppBlock works

AppBlock lets you block apps individually or by category, on custom schedules or instantly. You build a set of rules — block social apps during work hours, block games after midnight — and the rules run automatically.

  • Strengths: detailed, flexible rules; category blocking; works offline; good if you know your distraction list.
  • Limits: you maintain the block list, so it needs attention as your habits change; premium features require a subscription; a block-list approach asks you to keep chasing what distracts you.

How AuraLock works

AuraLock is whitelist-first. You create an Aura — a focus session with a purpose — and choose which apps stay alive inside it. Everything else waits quietly outside the boundary.

  • Two boundaries on the same Aura. Standard lets you pause or adjust; Strict commits you to the session with no pause and no early exit. Emergency calls and essential functions always stay available. See Standard vs Strict.
  • Guardian health checks. AuraLock watches your permissions and battery settings so a boundary never quietly stops working after an OS update. See the Guardian guide.
  • On-device and private. No account, no cloud, no tracking. Works offline.
  • One-time Pro. The complete experience is free; Pro is a one-time $4.99 — no subscription.

Where AppBlock is the better choice

Choose AppBlock if:

  • You know your distraction list well and want granular rules per app.
  • You want category-based blocking (for example, “block all games”).
  • You are comfortable maintaining the list and paying a subscription for the full feature set.

Where AuraLock is the better choice

Choose AuraLock if:

  • You want to decide what stays available, not what to ban.
  • You want a boundary that adapts — flexible on a normal day, Strict before a deadline.
  • You want protection from silent failures without checking settings yourself.
  • You prefer on-device privacy and a one-time price over a subscription.
  • You want a focus system that includes journaling and streaks, not just blocking. See goals, streaks, and the journal.

How to try both fairly

The fairest way to choose is to run each for a few days on real sessions.

  1. Start with the AuraLock getting started guide — it takes minutes.
  2. Create one Study or Deep Work Aura. See create your first Aura.
  3. Run it as Standard first, then try Strict before a real deadline. Notice how each feels.
  4. Set up a schedule so a boundary starts automatically. See Aura schedules.
  5. Also install AppBlock and build your rules. Compare: which one made focusing easier on the third day?

One caution: whatever you choose, make sure the app survives battery optimization, or it will silently stop working. Our battery optimization guide and the device guides cover Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Pixel phones.

Final thoughts

AppBlock and AuraLock solve the same problem with opposite philosophies. AppBlock gives you fine-grained control over what is banned; AuraLock gives you an intentional boundary around what stays. The question is whether you want to keep chasing distractions, or close the door and choose what matters.

AuraLock is free to start — try it and create an Aura that protects what matters to you, without the list to maintain.
